Narrative:

ILS runway 22R approach; first officer flying; told tower unable to comply with lahso. On the landing rollout; tower asked if we could hold short or make taxiway C. I answered and said we would make taxiway C. A clearance was issued by tower of which I read back; 'exit runway 22R at charlie.' while approaching runway 27L on taxiway C; tower said 'air carrier X; stop immediately!' I did; however; the aircraft had crossed the hold short line of runway 27L. An MD88 was rolling out on runway 27L and exited at taxiway C in front of us. We were then cleared to cross runway 27L and taxi to the gate. At the gate; I called the ord tower and spoke to the supervisor asking if there was any problem. He said no; however; offered the advice that we read back all runway hold short clrncs in the future. In the future I will not be so anxious to 'help' ATC by getting off a runway and will brief potential hot spots and taxi possibilities in-flight. Normally; I do this; however; on this leg was not as vigilant as I spent the time I normally brief taxi instructions checking lahso pink sheets. Fatigue was also a factor. This turned out to be a 3 hour flight. Also; even though the airport taxi diagram was out of my book on my chart holder and I had briefed there were hot spots; it did not register with me that if we exited taxiway C; we would be crossing runway 27L (a runway) to get to the gate. (Total lack of situational awareness on my part.) the only thing that saved us was the controller and the fact I taxi slow. Supplemental information from acn 787248: landing on runway 22R in ord; we had declined the lahso due to company restr for this runway in this aircraft. After landing; the tower asked if we could make the turnoff onto taxiway C; which the captain (PNF) accepted. I xferred controls to the captain for the taxi-in and looked away to turn to the taxi page for ord for the taxi-in. I then heard an emphatic 'air carrier X; stop' from the tower. The captain stopped the aircraft with the nose just over the hold short line. I then noticed an MD80 on the landing rollout on runway 27L; an intersecting runway. The MD80 was making the left turnoff onto taxiway C. We were quickly cleared to follow the MD80 across the runway. I did not plan to exit the runway at taxiway C; but expected to turn off onto taxiway right or taxiway east further down and was not as aware as I should have been of the short distance to runway 27L. I was more focused on complying with company procedure; getting the taxi page out; than monitoring the progress of the taxi-in. Thanks to the ord tower controller; we did not go further than a few ft onto runway 27L. In the future; I will get more familiar and brief the turnoffs before and after my planned runway exit.

Title: RJ FLT CREW LANDS 22R AT ORD AND EXITS AT TXWY C BUT FAILS TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27 AS INSTRUCTED.

Narrative: ILS RWY 22R APCH; FO FLYING; TOLD TWR UNABLE TO COMPLY WITH LAHSO. ON THE LNDG ROLLOUT; TWR ASKED IF WE COULD HOLD SHORT OR MAKE TXWY C. I ANSWERED AND SAID WE WOULD MAKE TXWY C. A CLRNC WAS ISSUED BY TWR OF WHICH I READ BACK; 'EXIT RWY 22R AT CHARLIE.' WHILE APCHING RWY 27L ON TXWY C; TWR SAID 'ACR X; STOP IMMEDIATELY!' I DID; HOWEVER; THE ACFT HAD CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE OF RWY 27L. AN MD88 WAS ROLLING OUT ON RWY 27L AND EXITED AT TXWY C IN FRONT OF US. WE WERE THEN CLRED TO CROSS RWY 27L AND TAXI TO THE GATE. AT THE GATE; I CALLED THE ORD TWR AND SPOKE TO THE SUPVR ASKING IF THERE WAS ANY PROB. HE SAID NO; HOWEVER; OFFERED THE ADVICE THAT WE READ BACK ALL RWY HOLD SHORT CLRNCS IN THE FUTURE. IN THE FUTURE I WILL NOT BE SO ANXIOUS TO 'HELP' ATC BY GETTING OFF A RWY AND WILL BRIEF POTENTIAL HOT SPOTS AND TAXI POSSIBILITIES INFLT. NORMALLY; I DO THIS; HOWEVER; ON THIS LEG WAS NOT AS VIGILANT AS I SPENT THE TIME I NORMALLY BRIEF TAXI INSTRUCTIONS CHKING LAHSO PINK SHEETS. FATIGUE WAS ALSO A FACTOR. THIS TURNED OUT TO BE A 3 HR FLT. ALSO; EVEN THOUGH THE ARPT TAXI DIAGRAM WAS OUT OF MY BOOK ON MY CHART HOLDER AND I HAD BRIEFED THERE WERE HOT SPOTS; IT DID NOT REGISTER WITH ME THAT IF WE EXITED TXWY C; WE WOULD BE XING RWY 27L (A RWY) TO GET TO THE GATE. (TOTAL LACK OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS ON MY PART.) THE ONLY THING THAT SAVED US WAS THE CTLR AND THE FACT I TAXI SLOW. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 787248: LNDG ON RWY 22R IN ORD; WE HAD DECLINED THE LAHSO DUE TO COMPANY RESTR FOR THIS RWY IN THIS ACFT. AFTER LNDG; THE TWR ASKED IF WE COULD MAKE THE TURNOFF ONTO TXWY C; WHICH THE CAPT (PNF) ACCEPTED. I XFERRED CTLS TO THE CAPT FOR THE TAXI-IN AND LOOKED AWAY TO TURN TO THE TAXI PAGE FOR ORD FOR THE TAXI-IN. I THEN HEARD AN EMPHATIC 'ACR X; STOP' FROM THE TWR. THE CAPT STOPPED THE ACFT WITH THE NOSE JUST OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I THEN NOTICED AN MD80 ON THE LNDG ROLLOUT ON RWY 27L; AN INTERSECTING RWY. THE MD80 WAS MAKING THE L TURNOFF ONTO TXWY C. WE WERE QUICKLY CLRED TO FOLLOW THE MD80 ACROSS THE RWY. I DID NOT PLAN TO EXIT THE RWY AT TXWY C; BUT EXPECTED TO TURN OFF ONTO TXWY R OR TXWY E FURTHER DOWN AND WAS NOT AS AWARE AS I SHOULD HAVE BEEN OF THE SHORT DISTANCE TO RWY 27L. I WAS MORE FOCUSED ON COMPLYING WITH COMPANY PROC; GETTING THE TAXI PAGE OUT; THAN MONITORING THE PROGRESS OF THE TAXI-IN. THANKS TO THE ORD TWR CTLR; WE DID NOT GO FURTHER THAN A FEW FT ONTO RWY 27L. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL GET MORE FAMILIAR AND BRIEF THE TURNOFFS BEFORE AND AFTER MY PLANNED RWY EXIT.
