Narrative:

We were cleared by ATC to turn to a 295 degree heading after passing the chikn intersection on the qball arrival in to stl. Approach informed us we would be landing on runway 11. We had previously briefed and set the FMS for runway 12R. Upon setting up the FMS for runway 11 the qball arrival dropped out of the FMS and the aircraft went into heading hold on approximately a 300 degree heading. A few minutes later ATC asked us what our heading was and we responded 295 degrees. The first officer had already updated the heading bug to 295 degrees. ATC assigned us a new heading and we landed uneventfully at stl with no traffic conflict. We were approximately 12 miles south of the chikn intersection when we turned to the 295 heading in error. Factors: 1. Busy cockpit activity running checklists and communicating with the flight attendants about the ride conditions. 2. Failure of us to back up FMS changes with the approach chart and each other. 3. ATC frequency congestion.
