Narrative:

1) new assigned heading and frequency change plus a request to expedite descent; from new york approach. 2) readback was not confirmed of above; as PNF only heard 'expedite descent.' 3) after a call to approach to confirm if there was a clearance; new clearance was issued to level off and stop turn. 4) PF queried with PNF 'check cleared heading' to ensure both crew had heard correct clearance. 5) time delay until recall caused a possible conflict with a B747; and approach gave new clearance which was followed -- no conflict was observed; but a conflict was certainly possible. Causal factors: 1) PNF had just returned to use of radio after PA announcement to have flight attendants prepare for landing statement. 2) PF was not sure if PNF had heard clearance and was hand flying and expediting descent. 3) the noise level in the B757 cockpit; with both packs and recirculation fans on; makes ATC communications difficult in the lower levels due to excessive cockpit noise.

Title: B757-200 FLT CREW FOLLOWED THE ATC CLRNC FOR ANOTHER ACFT. CLARIFICATION OF THE CLRNC WAS OBTAINED BEFORE A TFC CONFLICT OCCURRED.

Narrative: 1) NEW ASSIGNED HDG AND FREQ CHANGE PLUS A REQUEST TO EXPEDITE DSCNT; FROM NEW YORK APCH. 2) READBACK WAS NOT CONFIRMED OF ABOVE; AS PNF ONLY HEARD 'EXPEDITE DSCNT.' 3) AFTER A CALL TO APCH TO CONFIRM IF THERE WAS A CLRNC; NEW CLRNC WAS ISSUED TO LEVEL OFF AND STOP TURN. 4) PF QUERIED WITH PNF 'CHK CLRED HDG' TO ENSURE BOTH CREW HAD HEARD CORRECT CLRNC. 5) TIME DELAY UNTIL RECALL CAUSED A POSSIBLE CONFLICT WITH A B747; AND APCH GAVE NEW CLRNC WHICH WAS FOLLOWED -- NO CONFLICT WAS OBSERVED; BUT A CONFLICT WAS CERTAINLY POSSIBLE. CAUSAL FACTORS: 1) PNF HAD JUST RETURNED TO USE OF RADIO AFTER PA ANNOUNCEMENT TO HAVE FLT ATTENDANTS PREPARE FOR LNDG STATEMENT. 2) PF WAS NOT SURE IF PNF HAD HEARD CLRNC AND WAS HAND FLYING AND EXPEDITING DSCNT. 3) THE NOISE LEVEL IN THE B757 COCKPIT; WITH BOTH PACKS AND RECIRCULATION FANS ON; MAKES ATC COMS DIFFICULT IN THE LOWER LEVELS DUE TO EXCESSIVE COCKPIT NOISE.
