Narrative:

On climb out from ZZZ airport while passing through approximately 3000 ft MSL; we struck a flock of birds that resulted in severe damage to the #1 engine. We performed an in-flight shutdown per the QRH procedures. We declared an emergency; informed the passenger and flight attendants of the situation and diverted to ZZZ1. The landing was uneventful. After an inspection by ZZZ1 crash fire rescue equipment deemed that the aircraft was safe to taxi; we proceeded to the hardstand. No evacuate/evacuation was necessary.
