Narrative:

We landed on runway 8 in burbank and were told to roll long and make a right turn and hold abeam gate. We stopped there and waited for our gate to become available. After a while ATC asked us to move up and hold short of the first set of hold short markings (runway 8/26). When the gate cleared; we were instructed to taxi to the gate. We moved forward; followed what appeared to be a lead in line that would make an arcing/rounded turn to our gate and were informed by ATC that we needed to clear the runway; which we did promptly and parked on gate. There are several things that led to this event. First; there is no taxiway abeam the gates. It is a ramp area; with a centerline and a single solid/single dashed line presumably marking the edge of the ramp. Also; there is a hold short marking for runway 8/26 that is perpendicular to runway 8/26 that we were instructed to hold short of. Typically hold markings are parallel to the runway. Additionally; when we were cleared to our gate from the hold short marking; it seemed that we were cleared to utilize the area beyond the hold marking. The ramp centerline near the hold short markings for runway 8/26 splits. One goes straight ahead and the other veers to the right and joins what would appear to be the ramp edge marking. Though it can easily be confused with a lead in line for gate. While on this ramp centerline; there is very little wing clearance with equipment and the terminal buildings and the need to 'swing wide' for the turn into the parking spot is necessary. Between non-standard markings and clearance zones; no diagrams of runway boundaries and hold markings on the charts; lack of clearance with the terminal and confusing instructions; this could easily happen again. I think that we need to update the chart pages to show the airport boundaries and hold lines as well as a note about the 'hot spot' near the ramp area. Supplemental information from acn 765326: landed in burbank; ca. Instructed by ATC to hold on the ramp in between runway 8 and the terminal at the 'hold short line' for runway 8; facing west while waiting for our gate to open. When our gate opened; ATC gave us clearance to proceed to the gate. I crossed the 'hold short runway 8 threshold' and followed the yellow line that turned out toward the runway edge and joined another yellow line that paralleled runway 8 to allow room to maneuver to the gate. As I was making the 90+ degree turn back to the gate; my right wingtip may have crossed over the white runway 8 edge white line. ATC commanded us to get off the runway and said an aircraft was on final. We continued our turn in and parked at gate which was the quickest path away from the runway. I spoke to the ground controller on the phone who said 'no big deal; just let them know if I need more room next time.' after being told to 'hold at the runway 8 hold short line' and then cleared to the gate; I thought I had use of all the space I needed to get turned to parking. Especially since there is a yellow line leading toward and joining the ramp edge line in the direction I needed to taxi. With the inner yellow line so close to the building and equipment parked along the building; it seemed obvious to use the line that allowed a better and wider approach to the more than 90 degree turn to gate so that building clearance was assured. I thought the yellow line that turned toward and joined the solid/dashed yellow line that runs parallel to the runway was the correct line to follow. Neither of the airport diagrams or charts depict any of these confusing lines that exist nor is there any mention of this situation in the charts. If I am ever faced with this situation again; I will query ATC about what space I can have for the turn before moving the jet and if my wing can pass over the runway edge in the turn.

Title: MD80 FLT CREW RPTS MISTAKING RAMP EDGE LINES FOR TXWY LINES AT BUR.

Narrative: WE LANDED ON RWY 8 IN BURBANK AND WERE TOLD TO ROLL LONG AND MAKE A R TURN AND HOLD ABEAM GATE. WE STOPPED THERE AND WAITED FOR OUR GATE TO BECOME AVAILABLE. AFTER A WHILE ATC ASKED US TO MOVE UP AND HOLD SHORT OF THE FIRST SET OF HOLD SHORT MARKINGS (RWY 8/26). WHEN THE GATE CLRED; WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO TAXI TO THE GATE. WE MOVED FORWARD; FOLLOWED WHAT APPEARED TO BE A LEAD IN LINE THAT WOULD MAKE AN ARCING/ROUNDED TURN TO OUR GATE AND WERE INFORMED BY ATC THAT WE NEEDED TO CLR THE RWY; WHICH WE DID PROMPTLY AND PARKED ON GATE. THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS THAT LED TO THIS EVENT. FIRST; THERE IS NO TXWY ABEAM THE GATES. IT IS A RAMP AREA; WITH A CTRLINE AND A SINGLE SOLID/SINGLE DASHED LINE PRESUMABLY MARKING THE EDGE OF THE RAMP. ALSO; THERE IS A HOLD SHORT MARKING FOR RWY 8/26 THAT IS PERPENDICULAR TO RWY 8/26 THAT WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT OF. TYPICALLY HOLD MARKINGS ARE PARALLEL TO THE RWY. ADDITIONALLY; WHEN WE WERE CLRED TO OUR GATE FROM THE HOLD SHORT MARKING; IT SEEMED THAT WE WERE CLRED TO UTILIZE THE AREA BEYOND THE HOLD MARKING. THE RAMP CTRLINE NEAR THE HOLD SHORT MARKINGS FOR RWY 8/26 SPLITS. ONE GOES STRAIGHT AHEAD AND THE OTHER VEERS TO THE R AND JOINS WHAT WOULD APPEAR TO BE THE RAMP EDGE MARKING. THOUGH IT CAN EASILY BE CONFUSED WITH A LEAD IN LINE FOR GATE. WHILE ON THIS RAMP CTRLINE; THERE IS VERY LITTLE WING CLRNC WITH EQUIP AND THE TERMINAL BUILDINGS AND THE NEED TO 'SWING WIDE' FOR THE TURN INTO THE PARKING SPOT IS NECESSARY. BTWN NON-STANDARD MARKINGS AND CLRNC ZONES; NO DIAGRAMS OF RWY BOUNDARIES AND HOLD MARKINGS ON THE CHARTS; LACK OF CLRNC WITH THE TERMINAL AND CONFUSING INSTRUCTIONS; THIS COULD EASILY HAPPEN AGAIN. I THINK THAT WE NEED TO UPDATE THE CHART PAGES TO SHOW THE ARPT BOUNDARIES AND HOLD LINES AS WELL AS A NOTE ABOUT THE 'HOT SPOT' NEAR THE RAMP AREA. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 765326: LANDED IN BURBANK; CA. INSTRUCTED BY ATC TO HOLD ON THE RAMP IN BTWN RWY 8 AND THE TERMINAL AT THE 'HOLD SHORT LINE' FOR RWY 8; FACING W WHILE WAITING FOR OUR GATE TO OPEN. WHEN OUR GATE OPENED; ATC GAVE US CLRNC TO PROCEED TO THE GATE. I CROSSED THE 'HOLD SHORT RWY 8 THRESHOLD' AND FOLLOWED THE YELLOW LINE THAT TURNED OUT TOWARD THE RWY EDGE AND JOINED ANOTHER YELLOW LINE THAT PARALLELED RWY 8 TO ALLOW ROOM TO MANEUVER TO THE GATE. AS I WAS MAKING THE 90+ DEG TURN BACK TO THE GATE; MY R WINGTIP MAY HAVE CROSSED OVER THE WHITE RWY 8 EDGE WHITE LINE. ATC COMMANDED US TO GET OFF THE RWY AND SAID AN ACFT WAS ON FINAL. WE CONTINUED OUR TURN IN AND PARKED AT GATE WHICH WAS THE QUICKEST PATH AWAY FROM THE RWY. I SPOKE TO THE GND CTLR ON THE PHONE WHO SAID 'NO BIG DEAL; JUST LET THEM KNOW IF I NEED MORE ROOM NEXT TIME.' AFTER BEING TOLD TO 'HOLD AT THE RWY 8 HOLD SHORT LINE' AND THEN CLRED TO THE GATE; I THOUGHT I HAD USE OF ALL THE SPACE I NEEDED TO GET TURNED TO PARKING. ESPECIALLY SINCE THERE IS A YELLOW LINE LEADING TOWARD AND JOINING THE RAMP EDGE LINE IN THE DIRECTION I NEEDED TO TAXI. WITH THE INNER YELLOW LINE SO CLOSE TO THE BUILDING AND EQUIP PARKED ALONG THE BUILDING; IT SEEMED OBVIOUS TO USE THE LINE THAT ALLOWED A BETTER AND WIDER APCH TO THE MORE THAN 90 DEG TURN TO GATE SO THAT BUILDING CLRNC WAS ASSURED. I THOUGHT THE YELLOW LINE THAT TURNED TOWARD AND JOINED THE SOLID/DASHED YELLOW LINE THAT RUNS PARALLEL TO THE RWY WAS THE CORRECT LINE TO FOLLOW. NEITHER OF THE ARPT DIAGRAMS OR CHARTS DEPICT ANY OF THESE CONFUSING LINES THAT EXIST NOR IS THERE ANY MENTION OF THIS SITUATION IN THE CHARTS. IF I AM EVER FACED WITH THIS SITUATION AGAIN; I WILL QUERY ATC ABOUT WHAT SPACE I CAN HAVE FOR THE TURN BEFORE MOVING THE JET AND IF MY WING CAN PASS OVER THE RWY EDGE IN THE TURN.
