Narrative:

We were told to cross the end of runway 1R on taxiway A1; turn left onto taxiway left and hold. I turned left as instructed; stopped; and set the brake. I failed to observe that I had not crossed the hold bar painted even though I was now parallel with runway 1R. In fact; the hold bar was a few hundred ft ahead; after a slight turn. While I failed to follow proper procedures concerning verification of my position; I want to also suggest that the taxi chart is a bit misleading in its identification of txwys. It would be helpful to either show the hold line; which is not usually done; or at least add the designation of taxiway A1 on the chart on the east side of the extended runway; 1R.callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter emphasized that he was cleared to cross runway 1R on taxiway A1 and to turn left and hold on taxiway left. They held in that position while several other aircraft took off on runway 1R. It was only after an aircraft taking the runway commented that the '...757 is on the runway...' that there was any awareness of the failure to taxi down to taxiway left. Reporter further emphasized the lack of any taxiway signage after crossing the runway and the ambiguity regarding the identification of the hard surface east of the runway; stating that it appears to be a 'run-up area.' after being alerted; they could not actually see the hold short line on taxiway left from their position and it was only after taxiing forward that it came into view. He felt a depiction of the hold short line on the airport page would have been beneficial.

Title: CLRED TO CROSS SFO RWY 1R AT TXWY A1 AND HOLD SHORT OF TXWY L; B757 FLT CREW STOPS PRIOR TO HOLD SHORT LINE ON TXWY L; TECHNICALLY INCURRING ON RWY 1R.

Narrative: WE WERE TOLD TO CROSS THE END OF RWY 1R ON TXWY A1; TURN L ONTO TXWY L AND HOLD. I TURNED L AS INSTRUCTED; STOPPED; AND SET THE BRAKE. I FAILED TO OBSERVE THAT I HAD NOT CROSSED THE HOLD BAR PAINTED EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOW PARALLEL WITH RWY 1R. IN FACT; THE HOLD BAR WAS A FEW HUNDRED FT AHEAD; AFTER A SLIGHT TURN. WHILE I FAILED TO FOLLOW PROPER PROCS CONCERNING VERIFICATION OF MY POSITION; I WANT TO ALSO SUGGEST THAT THE TAXI CHART IS A BIT MISLEADING IN ITS IDENTIFICATION OF TXWYS. IT WOULD BE HELPFUL TO EITHER SHOW THE HOLD LINE; WHICH IS NOT USUALLY DONE; OR AT LEAST ADD THE DESIGNATION OF TXWY A1 ON THE CHART ON THE E SIDE OF THE EXTENDED RWY; 1R.CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR EMPHASIZED THAT HE WAS CLRED TO CROSS RWY 1R ON TXWY A1 AND TO TURN L AND HOLD ON TXWY L. THEY HELD IN THAT POSITION WHILE SEVERAL OTHER ACFT TOOK OFF ON RWY 1R. IT WAS ONLY AFTER AN ACFT TAKING THE RWY COMMENTED THAT THE '...757 IS ON THE RWY...' THAT THERE WAS ANY AWARENESS OF THE FAILURE TO TAXI DOWN TO TXWY L. RPTR FURTHER EMPHASIZED THE LACK OF ANY TXWY SIGNAGE AFTER CROSSING THE RWY AND THE AMBIGUITY REGARDING THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE HARD SURFACE E OF THE RWY; STATING THAT IT APPEARS TO BE A 'RUN-UP AREA.' AFTER BEING ALERTED; THEY COULD NOT ACTUALLY SEE THE HOLD SHORT LINE ON TXWY L FROM THEIR POSITION AND IT WAS ONLY AFTER TAXIING FORWARD THAT IT CAME INTO VIEW. HE FELT A DEPICTION OF THE HOLD SHORT LINE ON THE ARPT PAGE WOULD HAVE BEEN BENEFICIAL.
