Narrative:

On downwind for runway xxr at ZZZZ we received a flaps fail caution message when attempting to select flaps 8 degrees. We declared an emergency and asked for vectors while we ran checklists. ZZZZ arrival extended our downwind leg until we were ready for a base turn; which was about 15 mi out. All QRH procedures were followed and the flight standards manual was checked to verify adequate landing distance with emergency vehicles standing by. We made a flaps zero landing on runway xxr with no further problems.
