It was determined that left gear would not retract. Maintenance instructed us to select gear handle down. Remaining gears extended and remained extended while fuel was burned down to maximum landing weight. Followed QRH. Called dispatch/maintenance control. Followed maintenance instructions. Dispatch agreed that aircraft should return to the airport.
