Narrative:

Leveled off at FL320 and had just performed the cruise checklist when the captain side windshield broke. I performed the QRH procedures; spoke to the flight attendant and contacted dispatch. In the meantime I requested a descent to 10000 ft from center. We were about 70 mi east of ZZZ so I made the decision to divert into ZZZ as a precaution. At about 11000 ft we were handed off to tower and I declared an emergency. We landed uneventfully in ZZZ and taxied to the gate.
