Aircraft was exhibiting irregular engine operation. Notified controller and asked to return to starting point. Cleared back into class B and followed controller's instructions. Asked if I wanted to declare an emergency. I indicated negative. Passed off to tower; who declared an emergency. Landed without incident. Mechanic is in process of checking out what the problem was.
