Narrative:

Climbing through FL200; left engine overheat EICAS message; master caution light and discrete left engine overheat light came on. Following procedures; we slowly closed the left throttle to idle. After some mins and just prior to the procedure to shut down the left engine; the light went out; so we kept the engine running at idle. Declared an emergency and returned to ZZZ for a normal overweight landing. After landing; crash fire rescue equipment checked the aircraft out and followed us to the gate.
