Narrative:

During climb out of ZZZ; saw that the #2 engine oil temperature was in the yellow band. I gave the controls to the first officer and took out the procedure for high oil temperature. Per the procedure; we slowly reduced the throttle in order to get the oil temperature into normal range. After the throttle had been at idle for a couple mins; the temperature came down into the normal range. Peak temperature was about 178 degrees. All other engine parameters were normal. #2 oil temperature remained higher by 20-40 degrees than the #1 oil temperature. Procedure called for a landing at the nearest suitable airport. We asked for and immediately received clearance for a turn back to ZZZ. I talked to dispatch; arranged for landing data to be sent to us; and talked to the purser and passenger. While I was doing this; the first officer spoke with ATC and arranged for an approach to runway 14R and also for emergency equipment to roll. Landed at ZZZ slightly overweight (324K) on runway full length. Due to strong winds and long runway; was able to land with autobrakes off and applied brakes manually at 60 KTS. Brakes stayed cool (1-2) all the way to gate. After arriving at gate; maintenance advised that the #2 engine oil cooler solenoid had been changed the previous evening. Crew and passenger stayed with airplane at the gate while maintenance inspected the engine. About 45 mins later; maintenance took the airplane OTS. Things I didn't do that I would have if I'd thought of them: 1) hit the 'event record' EICAS button when the oil temperature was high; 2) declare an emergency.
