Narrative:

During preflight crew discovered that the aileron trim indexer was missing (not pointer). I referred to the MEL for guidance and could find none for the indexer. Rotated trim knob full left and right and then aligned pointer with notched maintenance reference notch. At that point I decided to accept the aircraft as flight worthy and departed yyc. After arrival; still concerned about the lack of reference to missing indexer; I contacted maintenance concerning the missing indexer and was advised that I should not have accepted the aircraft.
