Narrative:

This event occurred because we received a tailpipe hot warning in the cockpit. On takeoff from runway xx at ZZZ; we received a right tailpipe hot warning. We followed the aom volume 1 checklist. We then performed a precautionary engine shutdown and declared an emergency with ATC. We notified the flight attendant and contacted dispatch. We returned for landing at ZZZ. Requested VFR at ZZZ. After landing at ZZZ; we taxied to the gate then debriefed dispatch and maintenance control.
