Narrative:

While taxiing to runway 24L at cyyz we were cleared to cross runway 24R on taxiway D. We then proceeded to hold short of runway 24L on taxiway D7 at a correctly painted hold short marking. The tower controller indicated that we were in the wrong spot and should have stopped at an incorrectly painted (backwards) hold short marking behind us. He agreed it was painted backwards but said there were flashing lights associated with it. It was daylight and the lights were not obvious. Runway 24R is under construction. The controller said we were in the correct spot to hold short of the runway surface but we were infringing on the approach. There was no ILS hold short markings. The ATIS or NOTAMS did not say anything about this. ATC advised us after the fact.callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that he and the first officer worked this trip for an entire week and did verify that the hold short lines are painted backward. The reporter also stated that ATC is now occasionally warning pilots about the markings. However there was no NOTAM about this error and some pilots are still being cautioned after the fact about crossing the hold short line.
