Narrative:
Shortly after abeam of numbers in pattern at ZZZ airport engine abruptly stopped. Landed 300 ft short of runway in grass field. Right gear leg contacted a ditch and broke causing aircraft to roll over on its back. I; as the pilot; was the only occupant and was not injured. Upon disassembly of fuel system; found debris in gascolator; worn fuel float valve; improper installation of float needle and seat; float valve sticks in closed position.

Title: A HATZ CB-1 PILOT EXPERIENCED AN ENGINE FAILURE IN THE PATTERN; LANDED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY; AND ROLLED OVER ON ITS BACK WITH NO INJURY TO THE SOLE OCCUPANT; THE PILOT.
