Narrative:

During boarding at gate prior to departure electrical smoke coming from #2 coffee maker. Smoke dissipated when coffee maker and galley power turned off. Maintenance notified.callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that he considered not filing a report because this was a preflight event. He completed the report only for trend analysis. When the maintenance personnel entered the aircraft they identified the #2 coffee maker as somewhat warmer than the adjacent coffee maker. However; maintenance was not certain that the electrical smell was from that coffee maker so they checked the galley wiring from the flight station to the coffee maker and found no damage. A new coffee maker was installed and this reporter and his crew flew that aircraft for two legs with no recurrence of the electrical smell.

Title: AN MD80 PLT RPTS ELECTRICAL SMOKE FROM THE #2 COFFEE MAKER THAT DISSIPATED WHEN THE COFFEE MAKER AND GALLEY ELECTRICAL POWER WAS REMOVED.

Narrative: DURING BOARDING AT GATE PRIOR TO DEP ELECTRICAL SMOKE COMING FROM #2 COFFEE MAKER. SMOKE DISSIPATED WHEN COFFEE MAKER AND GALLEY POWER TURNED OFF. MAINT NOTIFIED.CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT HE CONSIDERED NOT FILING A RPT BECAUSE THIS WAS A PREFLT EVENT. HE COMPLETED THE RPT ONLY FOR TREND ANALYSIS. WHEN THE MAINT PERSONNEL ENTERED THE ACFT THEY IDENTIFIED THE #2 COFFEE MAKER AS SOMEWHAT WARMER THAN THE ADJACENT COFFEE MAKER. HOWEVER; MAINT WAS NOT CERTAIN THAT THE ELECTRICAL SMELL WAS FROM THAT COFFEE MAKER SO THEY CHECKED THE GALLEY WIRING FROM THE FLT STATION TO THE COFFEE MAKER AND FOUND NO DAMAGE. A NEW COFFEE MAKER WAS INSTALLED AND THIS RPTR AND HIS CREW FLEW THAT ACFT FOR TWO LEGS WITH NO RECURRENCE OF THE ELECTRICAL SMELL.
