Narrative:

On departure from ZZZ; the nose gear unsafe (red) light illuminated when the gear handle was selected up. The 'gear door' light was also illuminated; but the nose gear indicator 'pin' was retracted. The loud noise from the nose gear area made it obvious that at the very least; the door had not closed properly. I selected the gear handle down; and subsequently we got 3 green and locked down indications. I directed the first officer to get vectors for runway 27L; and declared an emergency; as we would be landing overweight. The first officer made a beautiful landing at about 138000 pounds and minimal sink rate.
