Narrative:

Landing on runway 28R at modesto; ca; the wind was reported as 310 degrees at 17 KTS gusting 26 KTS. I was approaching in a crab and then right wing low with flaps at 30 degrees; airspeed was around 80 mph. After setting down on the main gear; the wind began pushing the nose to the left. I started a slight turn to the right; once the nosewheel was on the runway; in an attempt to slowly steer back toward the runway centerline. Suddenly the right wing lifted and the speed of the turn to the right increased. The left wingtip skipped off the runway and the right wing came back down. At this point the aircraft was pointed directly into the wind. The aircraft came to a stop in the hard dirt to the right of the runway. I told the tower I was clear of the runway and they asked if I could move onto the taxiway to the right. I was able to taxi to the parking at the local FBO and the tower asked me to call back after the aircraft was inspected for any damage. No significant damage was found (by me or local maintenance personnel); just some paint scraped off of the bottom of the left fiberglass wingtip. The tower stated that due to the lack of damage; it was not necessary to file a report.

Title: PA28 CHEROKEE PLT HAS A RWY EXCURSION DURING LNDG AT MOD.

Narrative: LNDG ON RWY 28R AT MODESTO; CA; THE WIND WAS RPTED AS 310 DEGS AT 17 KTS GUSTING 26 KTS. I WAS APCHING IN A CRAB AND THEN R WING LOW WITH FLAPS AT 30 DEGS; AIRSPD WAS AROUND 80 MPH. AFTER SETTING DOWN ON THE MAIN GEAR; THE WIND BEGAN PUSHING THE NOSE TO THE L. I STARTED A SLIGHT TURN TO THE R; ONCE THE NOSEWHEEL WAS ON THE RWY; IN AN ATTEMPT TO SLOWLY STEER BACK TOWARD THE RWY CTRLINE. SUDDENLY THE R WING LIFTED AND THE SPD OF THE TURN TO THE R INCREASED. THE L WINGTIP SKIPPED OFF THE RWY AND THE R WING CAME BACK DOWN. AT THIS POINT THE ACFT WAS POINTED DIRECTLY INTO THE WIND. THE ACFT CAME TO A STOP IN THE HARD DIRT TO THE R OF THE RWY. I TOLD THE TWR I WAS CLR OF THE RWY AND THEY ASKED IF I COULD MOVE ONTO THE TXWY TO THE R. I WAS ABLE TO TAXI TO THE PARKING AT THE LCL FBO AND THE TWR ASKED ME TO CALL BACK AFTER THE ACFT WAS INSPECTED FOR ANY DAMAGE. NO SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE WAS FOUND (BY ME OR LCL MAINT PERSONNEL); JUST SOME PAINT SCRAPED OFF OF THE BOTTOM OF THE L FIBERGLASS WINGTIP. THE TWR STATED THAT DUE TO THE LACK OF DAMAGE; IT WAS NOT NECESSARY TO FILE A RPT.
