Narrative:

Before gate departure I questioned a logbook write-up and signoff with the mechanic at the gate and maintenance control technician by phone. The write-up stated 'no land 3 annunciated on asa in flight; repeat item.' the signoff stated 'ckd and found right stabilizer position transmitter at fault deferred per MEL inoperative entered in sheet.' the referenced MEL refers to automatic landing system and not to the stabilizer position transmitter being inoperative. The maintenance control technician told me on the phone the stabilizer position transmitter fault caused an autoplt failure and this caused the no land 3; he went on to say that this was a correct signoff. I accepted his explanation and departed. After takeoff I reviewed the MEL again. I now believe we may have inadvertently violated the MEL requirements for this write-up; although at no time did I believe we flew a non airworthy aircraft.

Title: REVIEW OF AML DURING FLT CAUSES CAPT TO BELIEVE A MAINT DEFERRAL WAS NOT CONSISTENT WITH MEL REQUIREMENTS.

Narrative: BEFORE GATE DEP I QUESTIONED A LOGBOOK WRITE-UP AND SIGNOFF WITH THE MECH AT THE GATE AND MAINT CTL TECHNICIAN BY PHONE. THE WRITE-UP STATED 'NO LAND 3 ANNUNCIATED ON ASA IN FLT; REPEAT ITEM.' THE SIGNOFF STATED 'CKD AND FOUND R STAB POS XMITTER AT FAULT DEFERRED PER MEL INOP ENTERED IN SHEET.' THE REFED MEL REFERS TO AUTOMATIC LNDG SYS AND NOT TO THE STABILIZER POS XMITTER BEING INOP. THE MAINT CTL TECHNICIAN TOLD ME ON THE PHONE THE STABILIZER POS XMITTER FAULT CAUSED AN AUTOPLT FAILURE AND THIS CAUSED THE NO LAND 3; HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT THIS WAS A CORRECT SIGNOFF. I ACCEPTED HIS EXPLANATION AND DEPARTED. AFTER TKOF I REVIEWED THE MEL AGAIN. I NOW BELIEVE WE MAY HAVE INADVERTENTLY VIOLATED THE MEL REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS WRITE-UP; ALTHOUGH AT NO TIME DID I BELIEVE WE FLEW A NON AIRWORTHY ACFT.
