Narrative:

Weight and balance data received via ACARS on taxi-out for takeoff showed passenger count of 81. Flight attendants had reported count of 76 passenger. The error of 81 versus 76 actual was not noticed until after takeoff. We had flight attendants recount and they came up with 76 again. We took off with more conservative data; but still; I should have caught the difference of 5 passenger. (The allowable error is +/-2 passenger.) sure it was hectic and busy at dca that day; but increased diligence on my part could have caught the error earlier.
