Narrative:

Flight attendant passed trays containing scheduled meals into cockpit. Soda can was on one of the trays and fell off the tray landing on the #1 engine master switch breaking it off at the stem. All engines continued to operate normally and I notified maintenance control with a query for shutting down the engine. Mr X told us to use the fire switch if necessary on arrival at the gate to shut down #1 engine. Upon arrival we could not secure the engine so shut it down using the fire switch. Maintenance did not meet us at the aircraft so I called them and asked if there was anything in particular they wanted us to do and was told 'no; just leave the broken off piece on the center console.'
