Narrative:

On climb out from ord; level at 5000 ft; we received a TCAS RA with target traffic co-altitude and co-located with our position. We followed the RA guidance (descending); and informed approach control as they instructed us to climb to 13000 ft. Approach informed us that they had no traffic in our vicinity. I then asked for a turn; which was granted; and RA traffic remained co-located and co-altitude with us throughout our maneuvering. Given the lack of traffic according to ord approach; and believing the RA to be false; I recycled the transponder and the RA disappeared. We then accepted clearance and proceeded on course.

Title: B737 CREW REACTS TO TCAS RA AT 5000 FT DEPARTING ORD.

Narrative: ON CLBOUT FROM ORD; LEVEL AT 5000 FT; WE RECEIVED A TCAS RA WITH TARGET TFC CO-ALT AND CO-LOCATED WITH OUR POS. WE FOLLOWED THE RA GUIDANCE (DSNDING); AND INFORMED APCH CTL AS THEY INSTRUCTED US TO CLB TO 13000 FT. APCH INFORMED US THAT THEY HAD NO TFC IN OUR VICINITY. I THEN ASKED FOR A TURN; WHICH WAS GRANTED; AND RA TFC REMAINED CO-LOCATED AND CO-ALT WITH US THROUGHOUT OUR MANEUVERING. GIVEN THE LACK OF TFC ACCORDING TO ORD APCH; AND BELIEVING THE RA TO BE FALSE; I RECYCLED THE XPONDER AND THE RA DISAPPEARED. WE THEN ACCEPTED CLRNC AND PROCEEDED ON COURSE.
