SID calls for (departure from runway 24) right turn after 1500 ft and climb to 2000 ft after 4.5 mi DME from teb VOR. Copilot set altitude alerter to 2000 ft versus 1500 ft initial limit; pilot climbed above 1500 ft and immediately began corrective action to descend back to 1500 ft from X altitude. Fast maximum altitude attained at 1800-1900 ft. Controller noted he 'saw a ______ at 2000 ft' -- advised above assigned altitude. At time of call; aircraft back to 1700 ft descending.
