Narrative:

Aircraft called in with a #2 CDU data bus intermittent. Our avionics technician was at the hangar. I was told by my lead technician to go MEL it under 23-5; which I did and received an authority/authorized number by maintenance control. When the avionics technician came back to the line; I asked him about this MEL for this problem because it did not seem right. He told me it should have been MEL'ed under 34-45. The aircraft was here at ZZZ so we both went out to it. We contacted maintenance control to let them know about the problem. We wrote it up in the logbook as being the wrong MEL; and cleared it. We then wrote up the original problem; he changed a computer and signed off the logbook to clear everything out. Normally our avionics technicians work avionics problems. He wasn't here so an a&P had to go deal with the avionics problem (me). I don't normally do avionic jobs on a routine basis.
