Narrative:

All cabins had finished the dinner service. Some flight attendants were on 'first break.' while I did not note the time; about 3 1/2 hours after takeoff (my best guess); flight attendants heard an unusual noise. Some flight attendants described the sound like a car backfiring. Flight attendant #1 reported the noise to the cockpit crew. About 20 mins later; I picked up a call from the cockpit at 1R. The captain advised that they heard the noise also and had been on the phone with maintenance. It was decided to land the aircraft. We would be landing in ZZZ in 55 mins. Flight attendant #1 and I gave her the phone for further cockpit instructions. I proceeded to advise other flight attendants that we would be landing at ZZZ in 55 mins so start securing the galleys. Flight attendant #1 advised flight attendants that a normal landing was expected. However; if an evacuate/evacuation became necessary; the captain would use signal by what exits not to use. We dumped some fuel. Several more times the engine made the strange sounds. Passenger seated at 31HJ saw huge sparks coming from the r-hand engine. The crew shut down the engine some time before landing. We landed safely. Fire trucks met our aircraft. We parked away from the terminal until the fire department and maintenance checked the aircraft to be sure the aircraft was safe to taxi to the terminal (procedures required by the airport). We arrived at the gate at XA52.
