Narrative:

I fly into both koa and lih; hi. Both airports have ASOS WX reporting when the tower is closed. In kona; you get an updated WX report every min on the ASOS frequency of 127.4. In lih; after the tower closes; the only thing you hear on the ASOS frequency 127.2 is that the tower is closed and NOTAMS. There is no WX information. ASOS is to become the primary surface WX observation system of the NWS in the united states. These observations are accomplished continuously with manual observations as necessary. In the air or on the ground; you can ask ZHN or hnl FSS for the WX. They will give it to you but it may be up to 1 hour old. On the ground; you can call and get a recording of the WX which is updated every min. I have written this up in the past and I was told that the lih system is working as it was designed to. Why can't pilots who need the WX get it? I know that other airlines have been flying into lih ever since the system was installed. Maybe they have access to updated WX another way.
