Narrative:

I was working placarded item -- terrain warning -- EICAS message. No problem was found with the system; but previous station has troubleshoot problem to #1 electronic flight instrument cover panel (ehse). From ipc obtained part # X. I went to the aircraft with this part in hand. The part already installed on aircraft was Y. I incorrectly assumed I had obtained the wrong part for the aircraft. I returned the X to stock; drew out a Y and replaced the ehse with a like part. The correct part was installed before the aircraft flew by next shift amt. Wrong part already on aircraft.
