Narrative:
Departure clearance was to track out on the abc 266 degree radial off of runway 26R. We inserted the radial into the FMS. At liftoff; first officer flying command bars directed a right turn. Within less than 5 seconds we realized this could not be right. Should have been runway (close to) centerline. First officer began a correction to the left same time tower instructed a left turn to heading 270 degrees. The tower was asking us what happened and thought we were trying to intercept a radial off of cde; not abc. We confirmed we had abc; and later realized the FMS was turning towards abc behind us; not the 266 degree radial away from abc. There were no conflicts; or TCAS; GPWS warnings. Lesson learned here would be to simply use the VOR raw data; not the FMS.

Title: AN A310 CLRED TO TRACK A VOR RADIAL FROM THE RWY; ATTEMPTED TO TURN TO THE VOR PRIOR TO TRACKING WHEN THE FMS'S MANUALLY PROGRAMMED DEP WAS ACTIVATED AFTER TKOF.
Narrative: DEP CLRNC WAS TO TRACK OUT ON THE ABC 266 DEG RADIAL OFF OF RWY 26R. WE INSERTED THE RADIAL INTO THE FMS. AT LIFTOFF; FO FLYING COMMAND BARS DIRECTED A R TURN. WITHIN LESS THAN 5 SECONDS WE REALIZED THIS COULD NOT BE RIGHT. SHOULD HAVE BEEN RWY (CLOSE TO) CTRLINE. FO BEGAN A CORRECTION TO THE L SAME TIME TWR INSTRUCTED A L TURN TO HDG 270 DEGS. THE TWR WAS ASKING US WHAT HAPPENED AND THOUGHT WE WERE TRYING TO INTERCEPT A RADIAL OFF OF CDE; NOT ABC. WE CONFIRMED WE HAD ABC; AND LATER REALIZED THE FMS WAS TURNING TOWARDS ABC BEHIND US; NOT THE 266 DEG RADIAL AWAY FROM ABC. THERE WERE NO CONFLICTS; OR TCAS; GPWS WARNINGS. LESSON LEARNED HERE WOULD BE TO SIMPLY USE THE VOR RAW DATA; NOT THE FMS.
