Narrative:

After sitting on the taxiway for almost 2 hours waiting for takeoff clearance; my friend and I took off toward home. 20 NM out of sioux city; ia; my engine sputtered. I immediately knew I had run out of gas; so while the engine was still running I climbed as high as I could; and found the nearest airport. The engine stopped and we glided as far as we could. I was still 9 mi away from the airport so I was forced to land on a little county road. It was a good power off landing and no one was hurt; also the plane had no damage whatsoever. Someone had seen us land and turned around to help us. We received help and got our gas; and took off on the road and flew safely back home; making sure to stop with more than enough fuel to refuel. I now know to factor in much more fuel burn for taxiing. The local law enforcement was also called to close the road for a safe takeoff.
