Narrative:

Aircraft maintenance log reviewed by the crew. APU was written as inoperative by previous captain. Action taken block was filled in with authority/authorized code and employee number of maintenance. Crew assumed the MEL was taken care of and asked and received a release from dispatch before departing. After parking checklist I reviewed the aml again and the discrepancy became more apparent. Maintenance came to the aircraft and said the entry was incorrect and the aircraft was grounded. Supplemental information from acn 702047: captain of the inbound flight incorrectly filled the maintenance log out making it appear as a maintenance action and closeout of the log. This crew should have caught the error.
