Narrative:

Upon handoff from dayton approach to columbus approach; I was given a vector of 090 degrees around WX. I had been flying with autoplt in the navigation coupled (to destination cmh) mode and upon receiving the vector I erroneously used the CDI needle to select the new heading rather than activating the heading mode on the autoplt and using the heading bug to designate the new heading thereby causing the aircraft to continue to fly the current heading which was different from the 090 degree vector. Following the vector; I turned my attention to the storm scope and noted that my position to the WX was not improving. Upon my subsequent call to approach; I realized and corrected my error. To my knowledge; no other traffic was impacted. Problem was caused by my focus on the WX issue to the extent that I made an autoplt error that I have never made in the 18 yrs that I have been flying with that same autoplt.

Title: BE35 PLT ACTIVATES OMNI BEARING SELECTOR (CDEI) VICE HDG KNOB TO COMPLY WITH THE ATC VECTOR AROUND WX. DISCOVER ERROR BY NOTING NO CHANGE IN RADAR DISPLAY RELATIVE TO THE WX RETURN.

Narrative: UPON HDOF FROM DAYTON APCH TO COLUMBUS APCH; I WAS GIVEN A VECTOR OF 090 DEGS AROUND WX. I HAD BEEN FLYING WITH AUTOPLT IN THE NAV COUPLED (TO DEST CMH) MODE AND UPON RECEIVING THE VECTOR I ERRONEOUSLY USED THE CDI NEEDLE TO SELECT THE NEW HDG RATHER THAN ACTIVATING THE HDG MODE ON THE AUTOPLT AND USING THE HDG BUG TO DESIGNATE THE NEW HDG THEREBY CAUSING THE ACFT TO CONTINUE TO FLY THE CURRENT HDG WHICH WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE 090 DEG VECTOR. FOLLOWING THE VECTOR; I TURNED MY ATTN TO THE STORM SCOPE AND NOTED THAT MY POS TO THE WX WAS NOT IMPROVING. UPON MY SUBSEQUENT CALL TO APCH; I REALIZED AND CORRECTED MY ERROR. TO MY KNOWLEDGE; NO OTHER TFC WAS IMPACTED. PROB WAS CAUSED BY MY FOCUS ON THE WX ISSUE TO THE EXTENT THAT I MADE AN AUTOPLT ERROR THAT I HAVE NEVER MADE IN THE 18 YRS THAT I HAVE BEEN FLYING WITH THAT SAME AUTOPLT.
