Narrative:

Upon arriving in sav; we were supposed to overnight. We waited for everyone to get off and shut the plane down. With a few delays finding my bag and helping a woman up the jetway; we loaded into the van about 45-50 mins after we blocked in. We were still in the van when the van driver was called to stop to have the captain call company. The van driver pulled over the van and stopped. We had no choice but to call scheduling. He was informed that we had to return to the airport and fly from sav to cvg because a crew was timing out. We returning and operated the flight. We were coming off reduced rest the night before. We get to cvg and overnighted there. I get home after the trip and contact my union representative to see if this was contractually legal. She got back to me and informed me not only was it against the contract but was against the FARS. 20 mins after block-in; you are released to rest. So now I realize that after 20 mins we were released to our compensatory rest. When we returned and operated the flight; we then were operating without the required amount of rest; therefore; violating the FARS.
