Narrative:

During routine overnight in ZZZZ; contract maintenance had placed left landing light on MEL. When company maintenance went to re-lamp light in ZZZ; mechanic found that lamp assembly had departed from aircraft while en route; causing minor damage to underside of wing. Airbus engineering had to be consulted since damaged area was made of composite material; located in a 'dry' segment of the wing. As a crew; we had assumed that; since the write-up stated that the light was simply 'inoperative;' the lamp was burned out; ZZZZ maintenance did not explain what; if anything; was done to attempt repair. Hence; we do not know why the light assembly was lost; but suspect faulty maintenance.
