Narrative:

Arrived into anchorage and taxied in to gate. As we proceeded in to the gate safety zone; all items were observed to be clear on both the right and left side of the aircraft. Wing walkers were on each wing and a lead marshaller was located on the taxi line directly in front of the airplane. The jetway was parked in its safety box and a normal taxi in was accomplished. The aircraft was parked exactly on the ramp spot labeled 'MD80; B737-700/800.' after some time elapsed and the jetway was not brought up to the aircraft; I opened up the cockpit side window and looked to see what the delay was. I noticed the jetway was very close to the #1 engine and that there were some rampers pointing at the jetway. We had apparently been marshaled into the jetway. We sat the people down and the ramp personnel used a tug to push us away from the jetway. The jetway was brought up to the airplane and the passenger deplaned normally. In a post event debrief with the manager of ground operations; it was noted that the jetway had been set for a B737-400 instead of a -700. Apparently; even with the jetway in its safety box it could still hit a -700. It was also related at this time; when I asked why the wing walker had not seen this coming and stopped us; I was told he had signaled the emergency stop to the lead marshaller; but the lead didn't see the signal because he was watching the nosewheel.

Title: A B737-700 L ENG COWLING WAS DAMAGED AS THE ACFT WAS MARSHALED INTO A JETWAY AFTER A WING WALKER'S STOP COMMAND WAS NOT OBSERVED.

Narrative: ARRIVED INTO ANCHORAGE AND TAXIED IN TO GATE. AS WE PROCEEDED IN TO THE GATE SAFETY ZONE; ALL ITEMS WERE OBSERVED TO BE CLR ON BOTH THE R AND L SIDE OF THE ACFT. WING WALKERS WERE ON EACH WING AND A LEAD MARSHALLER WAS LOCATED ON THE TAXI LINE DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE AIRPLANE. THE JETWAY WAS PARKED IN ITS SAFETY BOX AND A NORMAL TAXI IN WAS ACCOMPLISHED. THE ACFT WAS PARKED EXACTLY ON THE RAMP SPOT LABELED 'MD80; B737-700/800.' AFTER SOME TIME ELAPSED AND THE JETWAY WAS NOT BROUGHT UP TO THE ACFT; I OPENED UP THE COCKPIT SIDE WINDOW AND LOOKED TO SEE WHAT THE DELAY WAS. I NOTICED THE JETWAY WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE #1 ENG AND THAT THERE WERE SOME RAMPERS POINTING AT THE JETWAY. WE HAD APPARENTLY BEEN MARSHALED INTO THE JETWAY. WE SAT THE PEOPLE DOWN AND THE RAMP PERSONNEL USED A TUG TO PUSH US AWAY FROM THE JETWAY. THE JETWAY WAS BROUGHT UP TO THE AIRPLANE AND THE PAX DEPLANED NORMALLY. IN A POST EVENT DEBRIEF WITH THE MGR OF GND OPS; IT WAS NOTED THAT THE JETWAY HAD BEEN SET FOR A B737-400 INSTEAD OF A -700. APPARENTLY; EVEN WITH THE JETWAY IN ITS SAFETY BOX IT COULD STILL HIT A -700. IT WAS ALSO RELATED AT THIS TIME; WHEN I ASKED WHY THE WING WALKER HAD NOT SEEN THIS COMING AND STOPPED US; I WAS TOLD HE HAD SIGNALED THE EMER STOP TO THE LEAD MARSHALLER; BUT THE LEAD DIDN'T SEE THE SIGNAL BECAUSE HE WAS WATCHING THE NOSEWHEEL.
