Narrative:

Waited 1 hour 30 mins to have engine inlets deiced. After engine inlets were deiced; taxied to spot xx for complete aircraft deicing. Received the 'deicing was complete and the airplane was clean' report. Started both engines and taxied for takeoff. Encountered no delays. Ran engines up before takeoff. Engines sounded normal. After takeoff; flight attendant called the cockpit and informed us of the loud noise and vibration coming from the left engine. Vibration and noise reduced when throttle was retarded. Operated left engine at reduced power setting; declared emergency; and returned to ZZZ. Landed overweight. Flight attendant and company B777 captain reported that right after the nosewheel lifted off; the left engine started making noise and vibrating.
