Narrative:

Awaiting takeoff for runway 8R; we were cleared into position and hold. Busy tower frequency with runway 9 closed; lndgs runway 12; runway 8R; and runway 8L. When I looked to clear final; I saw landing lights approximately 2 mi final that I wasn't convinced were lined up with runway 8L. A glance at the TCAS made me wonder more; so I stopped the aircraft with the nose and right wing extending over the hold line approximately 10 ft. The first officer tried to contact the tower; but the tower was busy with other calls and didn't reply until the third call when the first officer stated we were holding short. By that time; a B757 was approximately 1/2 mi final for runway 8R and the tower advised us to hold short. Subsequent takeoff clearance was normal and included a 'sorry about that' from mia tower. If we had not stopped; at a minimum; a go around would have occurred.

Title: CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 8R IN MIA; B757 FLT CREW SEES A SECOND B757 ON SHORT FINAL AND BRAKE TO A STOP WITH ONLY NOSE AND R WING ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE.

Narrative: AWAITING TKOF FOR RWY 8R; WE WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD. BUSY TWR FREQ WITH RWY 9 CLOSED; LNDGS RWY 12; RWY 8R; AND RWY 8L. WHEN I LOOKED TO CLR FINAL; I SAW LNDG LIGHTS APPROX 2 MI FINAL THAT I WASN'T CONVINCED WERE LINED UP WITH RWY 8L. A GLANCE AT THE TCAS MADE ME WONDER MORE; SO I STOPPED THE ACFT WITH THE NOSE AND R WING EXTENDING OVER THE HOLD LINE APPROX 10 FT. THE FO TRIED TO CONTACT THE TWR; BUT THE TWR WAS BUSY WITH OTHER CALLS AND DIDN'T REPLY UNTIL THE THIRD CALL WHEN THE FO STATED WE WERE HOLDING SHORT. BY THAT TIME; A B757 WAS APPROX 1/2 MI FINAL FOR RWY 8R AND THE TWR ADVISED US TO HOLD SHORT. SUBSEQUENT TKOF CLRNC WAS NORMAL AND INCLUDED A 'SORRY ABOUT THAT' FROM MIA TWR. IF WE HAD NOT STOPPED; AT A MINIMUM; A GAR WOULD HAVE OCCURRED.
