Narrative:

I am a contract pilot for a part 91 flight department that operates a king air 350. The department has a chief maintenance officer who is responsible for overseeing; managing; tracking and scheduling all maintenance done on this aircraft. The chief maintenance officer updates and signs off an aircraft status sheet each day stating that the aircraft is airworthy and not due for inspection. This is the sheet that the pilots check before a flight and confirm the aircraft is legal. On apr/thu/05; I flew the aircraft on a routine trip. On apr/fri/05 I was informed by the chief maintenance officer that the aircraft was out of date on a routine inspection. There were no incidents; but the aircraft was not legal for flight. The chief maintenance officer has been removed of all duties and the chief pilot will track; manage; and schedule all maintenance for our aircraft. This will remove trust as a factor when verifying the aircraft's status which will ensure that the aircraft is not flown past inspection in the future. There were several contributing factors to this event. 1) misinterp of the maintenance phase program by the chief maintenance officer and pilots. 2) breakdown of communication between chief maintenance officer and pilots. 3) pressure to schedule the aircraft inspections as close to the 200 hour time for maximum benefit. 4) pilot's failure to personally check inspection dates and requirements. 5) use of an inaccurate time sheet to verify inspection times. 6) chief maintenance officer inaccurately tracking and recording inspection times. 7) aircraft not on manufacturer's recommended inspection tracking program. 8) logbooks not easily accessible to pilots.
