Narrative:
On dec/tue/04 approximately XA00, I was assigned to work aircraft X to accomplish an overweight landing check. The 'phase 1 check' portion of the mcm contains a 'part a' and a 'part B.' it was unclr regarding the severity of the landing (soft) which part (a or B) needed to be accomplished. I turned to the maintenance manual for clarity. Per maintenance manual, step applicable when the aircraft landing was overweight but not a hard landing. After accomplishment of phase 1, step 2, no defects were noted. As per procedure, no more inspections were necessary. Confusion arose as to which procedures to follow -- maintenance manual or mcm. After contacting the system department, I was instructed by them through mod and engineering to perform the check per maintenance manual and part a of phase 1 check of the mcm, which I accomplished. After further review of the general procedures manual I believe that the mcm supersedes the maintenance manual and maybe I should have also accomplished part B of the phase 1 check of the mcm.

Title: A TECHNICIAN ACCOMPLISHING AN OVERWT INSPECTION ON A B737-800 RPTS CONFUSION AS TO WHAT DOCUMENT TO USE FOR THE INSPECTION.
Narrative: ON DEC/TUE/04 APPROX XA00, I WAS ASSIGNED TO WORK ACFT X TO ACCOMPLISH AN OVERWT LNDG CHK. THE 'PHASE 1 CHK' PORTION OF THE MCM CONTAINS A 'PART A' AND A 'PART B.' IT WAS UNCLR REGARDING THE SEVERITY OF THE LNDG (SOFT) WHICH PART (A OR B) NEEDED TO BE ACCOMPLISHED. I TURNED TO THE MAINT MANUAL FOR CLARITY. PER MAINT MANUAL, STEP APPLICABLE WHEN THE ACFT LNDG WAS OVERWT BUT NOT A HARD LNDG. AFTER ACCOMPLISHMENT OF PHASE 1, STEP 2, NO DEFECTS WERE NOTED. AS PER PROC, NO MORE INSPECTIONS WERE NECESSARY. CONFUSION AROSE AS TO WHICH PROCS TO FOLLOW -- MAINT MANUAL OR MCM. AFTER CONTACTING THE SYS DEPT, I WAS INSTRUCTED BY THEM THROUGH MOD AND ENGINEERING TO PERFORM THE CHK PER MAINT MANUAL AND PART A OF PHASE 1 CHK OF THE MCM, WHICH I ACCOMPLISHED. AFTER FURTHER REVIEW OF THE GENERAL PROCS MANUAL I BELIEVE THAT THE MCM SUPERSEDES THE MAINT MANUAL AND MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE ALSO ACCOMPLISHED PART B OF THE PHASE 1 CHK OF THE MCM.
