Narrative:

Captain declared a fuel emergency to ensure expeditious handling in the ewr pattern after a directed breakout and go around from the ILS runway 22L at ewr. Just outside the marker on initial contact with tower, we were informed that traffic 4.5 NM ahead was a B767 and asked to report it in sight. At night against the dense lights of the ewr area, captain (PNF) informed controller we were unable to make positive contact. Tower canceled approach clearance and directed a go around in accordance with published missed approach procedures. On initial contact with new york approach, captain declared minimum fuel (7.2K remaining). Soon thereafter, controller informed us to expect 50 flying mi to touchdown and inquired if we were able. Captain said no, and declared the fuel emergency. We received expedited handling and were told we had been moved up from #20 to #12 in sequence. Subsequent approach and landing uneventful.
