Narrative:

On the airway at 13000 ft MSL, icing reported only above 15000 ft. Started picking up trace rime ice. Altitude changes did not help. Considered returning to lakeview to land. Before decision could be made to turn back, picked up moderate to heavy ice quickly. Could not maintain altitude, necessitating descent below MEA and eastward deviation to lower terrain. Center gave vectors to lower terrain and followed on radio even after radar contact lost. Broke out of overcast at 10000 ft, dropped below freezing level and shed ice. Proceeded south visually and was reacquired by center. Vectors were given for reno (rno) ILS. Problem caused by relying on absence of icing reports at my altitude and not turning back immediately after accumulating ice. Could have avoided problem by implementing above solutions, not going, or choosing an alternate route.

BEFORE DECISION COULD BE MADE TO TURN BACK, PICKED UP MODERATE TO HVY ICE QUICKLY. COULD NOT MAINTAIN ALT, NECESSITATING DSCNT BELOW MEA AND EASTWARD DEV TO LOWER TERRAIN. CTR GAVE VECTORS TO LOWER TERRAIN AND FOLLOWED ON RADIO EVEN AFTER RADAR CONTACT LOST. BROKE OUT OF OVCST AT 10000 FT, DROPPED BELOW FREEZING LEVEL AND SHED ICE. PROCEEDED S VISUALLY AND WAS REACQUIRED BY CTR. VECTORS WERE GIVEN FOR RENO (RNO) ILS. PROB CAUSED BY RELYING ON ABSENCE OF ICING RPTS AT MY ALT AND NOT TURNING BACK IMMEDIATELY AFTER ACCUMULATING ICE. COULD HAVE AVOIDED PROB BY IMPLEMENTING ABOVE SOLUTIONS, NOT GOING, OR CHOOSING AN ALTERNATE RTE.
