Narrative:

En route from griffiss AFB in new york to stewart AFB, ny, in contact with new york approach control on 132.75, IMC at 6000 ft MSL, GPWS warning 'terrain, terrain' followed by 'pull up.' per our regulations being IMC and not being able to see ground or obstructions I added thrust initiated a climb while advising new york approach of same. By 6000 ft the warning ceased. I leveled at 7000 ft. New york approach control was helpful but expressed concern at above procedure. Reclred to 6000 ft by new york at that time.

NEW YORK APCH CTL WAS HELPFUL BUT EXPRESSED CONCERN AT ABOVE PROC. RECLRED TO 6000 FT BY NEW YORK AT THAT TIME.
