Narrative:

On oct/fri/04, I received a letter of investigation concerning a paperwork error on a B737-300. The letter reads: 'in reviewing the aircraft's flight/maintenance log page XXXX dated aug/thu/04 indicates you were the mechanic that signed for one of these discrepancies and you found the engine egt within the maintenance manual limits. However, there is no documentation as to what section of the maintenance manual was used to make the within 'maintenance manual limits' determination. It appears you may have performed maintenance contrary to the maintenance procedures manual and title 14 code of the federal regulations.' I have obtained a copy of the log page in question as well as a copy of the maintenance procedures manual section that pertains to the 'within maintenance manual limits,' both of which will be fixes with this report, continued on a copy of this page marked 2A chapter 05-08 paragraph G item 24C states, 'entries such as 'repaired,' 'ok for service,' within limits,' etc, are acceptable when accompanied by a description or manual reference of how the determination was made. I believe that the description in the action taken block of the log page describes how the determination was made, thereby satisfying chapter 05-08 paragraph G item 24C of the maintenance procedures manual.

Title: A B737-300 TECHNICIAN RECEIVED A LETTER OF INVESTIGATION FROM THE FAA FOR AN EGT RPT SIGNED OFF AS WITHIN MAINT MANUAL LIMITS.

Narrative: ON OCT/FRI/04, I RECEIVED A LETTER OF INVESTIGATION CONCERNING A PAPERWORK ERROR ON A B737-300. THE LETTER READS: 'IN REVIEWING THE ACFT'S FLT/MAINT LOG PAGE XXXX DATED AUG/THU/04 INDICATES YOU WERE THE MECH THAT SIGNED FOR ONE OF THESE DISCREPANCIES AND YOU FOUND THE ENG EGT WITHIN THE MAINT MANUAL LIMITS. HOWEVER, THERE IS NO DOCUMENTATION AS TO WHAT SECTION OF THE MAINT MANUAL WAS USED TO MAKE THE WITHIN 'MAINT MANUAL LIMITS' DETERMINATION. IT APPEARS YOU MAY HAVE PERFORMED MAINT CONTRARY TO THE MAINT PROCS MANUAL AND TITLE 14 CODE OF THE FEDERAL REGS.' I HAVE OBTAINED A COPY OF THE LOG PAGE IN QUESTION AS WELL AS A COPY OF THE MAINT PROCS MANUAL SECTION THAT PERTAINS TO THE 'WITHIN MAINT MANUAL LIMITS,' BOTH OF WHICH WILL BE FIXES WITH THIS RPT, CONTINUED ON A COPY OF THIS PAGE MARKED 2A CHAPTER 05-08 PARAGRAPH G ITEM 24C STATES, 'ENTRIES SUCH AS 'REPAIRED,' 'OK FOR SVC,' WITHIN LIMITS,' ETC, ARE ACCEPTABLE WHEN ACCOMPANIED BY A DESCRIPTION OR MANUAL REF OF HOW THE DETERMINATION WAS MADE. I BELIEVE THAT THE DESCRIPTION IN THE ACTION TAKEN BLOCK OF THE LOG PAGE DESCRIBES HOW THE DETERMINATION WAS MADE, THEREBY SATISFYING CHAPTER 05-08 PARAGRAPH G ITEM 24C OF THE MAINT PROCS MANUAL.
