Narrative:

Instructed by ramp control to follow MD80 ahead via outer bridge transition to the north taxiway line to spot X. Just after crossing the bridge wbound and getting ready to transition to the north line we were passed up on the right side by a fast taxiing B737-300. If I did not have my first officer visually clear the area on the right we would have had a ground collision. No mention of this aircraft coming up on our right side was ever made by the ramp controller. We neither heard a resequence over spot X. Crossing aircraft on the ramp is hazardous. Ramp control needs to warn aircraft when other aircraft are passing them, because of our blind spots.
