Narrative:

Takeoff clearance was to disregard the 1.5 DME to turn out. 4 aircraft in front of us were told to disregard the 1.5 DME for the turn out. We both thought that tower told us to disregard the 1.5 DME. WX was 200 ft overcast, 3500 ft RVR. After takeoff at about 600-800 ft AGL I started a slow right turn to 100 degrees. Due to the field placement of jfk VOR we were at about 1.5 DME, but we did not specifically rely on the 1.5 DME for the turn. We were approximately 1.5 DME when we turned. Climbing out jfk asked if we turned at the 1.5 DME. We told tower that we thought the clearance was to disregard. We did not prolong the conversation due to the WX, but it was very distracting. Tower said not to worry about it. However, we realized that even though we did not specifically use the 1.5 DME, we turned at approximately 1.5 DME to a heading of 100 degrees.

Title: A B767 FLT CREW THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE TOLD TO DISREGARD THE 1 PT 5 DME TURN. AFTER DEP, JFK TWR ASKED IF THEY USED THE 1 PT 5 DME TO TURN.

Narrative: TKOF CLRNC WAS TO DISREGARD THE 1.5 DME TO TURN OUT. 4 ACFT IN FRONT OF US WERE TOLD TO DISREGARD THE 1.5 DME FOR THE TURN OUT. WE BOTH THOUGHT THAT TWR TOLD US TO DISREGARD THE 1.5 DME. WX WAS 200 FT OVCST, 3500 FT RVR. AFTER TKOF AT ABOUT 600-800 FT AGL I STARTED A SLOW R TURN TO 100 DEGS. DUE TO THE FIELD PLACEMENT OF JFK VOR WE WERE AT ABOUT 1.5 DME, BUT WE DID NOT SPECIFICALLY RELY ON THE 1.5 DME FOR THE TURN. WE WERE APPROX 1.5 DME WHEN WE TURNED. CLBING OUT JFK ASKED IF WE TURNED AT THE 1.5 DME. WE TOLD TWR THAT WE THOUGHT THE CLRNC WAS TO DISREGARD. WE DID NOT PROLONG THE CONVERSATION DUE TO THE WX, BUT IT WAS VERY DISTRACTING. TWR SAID NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. HOWEVER, WE REALIZED THAT EVEN THOUGH WE DID NOT SPECIFICALLY USE THE 1.5 DME, WE TURNED AT APPROX 1.5 DME TO A HDG OF 100 DEGS.
