Narrative:

While taxiing to active runway for departure, unicom advised me to taxi back to the FBO. Instead of taxiing all the way to the end of the taxiway to the run-up area, I unknowingly used a service road to return to the terminal. Prior to reaching the terminal ramp, I noticed a large fuel tank on the right side of the road. While watching the tank to avoid it, I overlooked a sign posted on the right side of the road and struck it with my wingtip. Supplemental information from acn 628719: my student was endorsed for a solo cross country.
