Narrative:

All pretkof checklists complete. Cho tower asked preceding aircraft (C172) in position on runway 3 what they wanted to do because field went IFR. They requested to go back to gate. They taxied off runway. We called ready. Cho tower apparently told us to taxi into position and hold. Upon completing before takeoff checklist, I xferred controls to copilot. He ran up engine to target EPR at my request and then began to accelerate down the runway. ATC (tower), shortly after takeoff roll, idented us and told us to 'cancel takeoff clearance,' that we 'weren't given a takeoff clearance.' we immediately stopped our roll and exited the runway. I am unsure why I believed we had a takeoff clearance. My first officer on taxi back reflected and said he did say position and hold. We apologized and proceeded to destination without further incident. Not sleeping well the night before might have played a part in why I was inattentive.

Narrative: ALL PRETKOF CHKLISTS COMPLETE. CHO TWR ASKED PRECEDING ACFT (C172) IN POS ON RWY 3 WHAT THEY WANTED TO DO BECAUSE FIELD WENT IFR. THEY REQUESTED TO GO BACK TO GATE. THEY TAXIED OFF RWY. WE CALLED READY. CHO TWR APPARENTLY TOLD US TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD. UPON COMPLETING BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST, I XFERRED CTLS TO COPLT. HE RAN UP ENG TO TARGET EPR AT MY REQUEST AND THEN BEGAN TO ACCELERATE DOWN THE RWY. ATC (TWR), SHORTLY AFTER TKOF ROLL, IDENTED US AND TOLD US TO 'CANCEL TKOF CLRNC,' THAT WE 'WEREN'T GIVEN A TKOF CLRNC.' WE IMMEDIATELY STOPPED OUR ROLL AND EXITED THE RWY. I AM UNSURE WHY I BELIEVED WE HAD A TKOF CLRNC. MY FO ON TAXI BACK REFLECTED AND SAID HE DID SAY POS AND HOLD. WE APOLOGIZED AND PROCEEDED TO DEST WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. NOT SLEEPING WELL THE NIGHT BEFORE MIGHT HAVE PLAYED A PART IN WHY I WAS INATTENTIVE.
