Narrative:
We were cleared on to runway 25R to hold for takeoff and advised that another aircraft would cross downfield. Traffic crossed downfield and then an air carrier Y was cleared to line up and hold on runway 25R at intersection C3, we were holding at the end of the runway. I think this not only is a bad idea it is, in my opinion, unsafe to put 2 aircraft, on the same runway at the same time especially since it does not save anything. In fact I think it would be safer if we stopped the 'on to hold period' and just cleared aircraft, to take off from the #1 position and did all rolling takeoffs, period.
