Narrative:

Had intercepted GS and localizer for ILS runway 28R at sfo and initially directed to hold 170 KIAS to OM. After handoff to tower, we were directed to slow to approach speed immediately. Obviously, separation was minimal and we were directed to go around, climb to 5000 ft and turn to heading 100 degrees. Captain and I understood right turn to 100 degrees. During climb turn, we got a yellow RA on TCASII and concurrently were directed to turn left to 100 degrees. Tower called out 'air carrier Y, traffic at 2 O'clock position' which we observed and immediately turned left utilizing autoplt. Never closed tighter than 1000 ft and 3 mi with air carrier Y. Then flew normal downwind and uneventful next ILS approach to sfo runway 28R.

Title: B757 FLT CREW, LNDG SFO, EXPERIENCED CONFUSION REGARDING TWR ISSUED TURN DIRECTION DURING GAR.

Narrative: HAD INTERCEPTED GS AND LOC FOR ILS RWY 28R AT SFO AND INITIALLY DIRECTED TO HOLD 170 KIAS TO OM. AFTER HDOF TO TWR, WE WERE DIRECTED TO SLOW TO APCH SPD IMMEDIATELY. OBVIOUSLY, SEPARATION WAS MINIMAL AND WE WERE DIRECTED TO GO AROUND, CLB TO 5000 FT AND TURN TO HDG 100 DEGS. CAPT AND I UNDERSTOOD R TURN TO 100 DEGS. DURING CLB TURN, WE GOT A YELLOW RA ON TCASII AND CONCURRENTLY WERE DIRECTED TO TURN L TO 100 DEGS. TWR CALLED OUT 'ACR Y, TFC AT 2 O'CLOCK POS' WHICH WE OBSERVED AND IMMEDIATELY TURNED L UTILIZING AUTOPLT. NEVER CLOSED TIGHTER THAN 1000 FT AND 3 MI WITH ACR Y. THEN FLEW NORMAL DOWNWIND AND UNEVENTFUL NEXT ILS APCH TO SFO RWY 28R.
