Narrative:

Cleared by tower control to cross runway 8R/26L at taxiway E11. Ground control cleared us to taxi on taxiway east (wbound) to ramp, no other instructions given. I allowed aircraft to accelerate going downhill (on taxiway east) and carried power to keep aircraft expeditiously climbing back uphill. During this time the first officer was completing after landing checklist. Approaching taxiway D intersection, I was startled to see a regional jet aircraft approaching my path, from right to left (my blind side) and applied heavy braking. Tower (on a different frequency) had cleared the rj to cross runway 8R/26L at taxiway D.
